Professional Sounding

They don't want you to write a description, they want you to write "Author comments". Say stuff about how you made the song, what inspired you, if you had help from any friends, the things you learnt whilst making etc. The song itself is fairly generic, the instruments are all typical of the genre and the guitar riffs weren't exactly mind blowing. However i enjoyed the quieter section at 1:40 and the choir sounded nice. The song is a little repetitive, perhaps some vocals could add some interest? The sound production is great and all the instruments sound nice. Perhaps a little to much reverb at parts.... You obviously know what you're doing so i just reccomend you experiment a little more. Good stuff!

mr-vincent responds:

Hahahaha men, thank you ! I'm doing all this alone with Cubase and Reason and my guitar :p

Vocals will be a great Idea, but I don't sing...

Thanks for the good comment !

Original composition?

From reading your description it appears you have just stuck various pre-made loops together. This takes very little skill and is not what the audio portal is for. Fair enough if you wan't to practice making music and learn about song structure etc. then fine, use loops. However the audio portal is for original work and if you did not compose the loops you are using i do not reccomend you upload the final product to Newgrounds. Using drum samples is one thing but this is another.

let the public respond. some people won't care, and they will love it just the same.

Very nice

Great mix of instruments. The bass line that runs throughout holds the piece together and gives it some structure as the other instruments shift and change around it. You're string sounds are very realistic, as in fact are most of your instruments, the overall sound production is great. I think perhaps the bass is a little loud at parts, but mostly the mixing and mastering is good. The song is fairly repetitive and whilst you've varied the instrumentation the general chord pattern and melodies remain fairly static. Overall i think it's a nice piece but the song structure and composition needs a little work. The ending is very abrupt too.

dahfuh responds:

for the ending i was editing so the file would be the right size and that got cut without me even noticing.

Nice

Well first off i'm surprised. An artist on Newgrounds who sings?! And who appears to have music theory knowledge?!?! A song on Newgrounds that isn't 4 chord techno?!?!! I really enjoyed your song. You have a great voice and the lyrics are lovely too. The sound production is amazing, it all sounds very professional. The actual composition is really nice, lovely chord progression and the whole thing has a really relaxed feel. You obviously took making this song seriously and it paid off. This is a really nice piece and has earned a place in my song collection. Excellent work!

Kor-Rune responds:

Thanks man! There's quite a bit of techno rampant on Newgrounds, yeah. I'm glad to offer a bit of fresh air!

I'm happy you like my production and composition! I did pour my weekend into this short little track. Thanks for listening, I appreciate it! Sadly I only have one more track like this, and it's a cover, but I have a whole bunch more music!

I see you have submissions too, I'll shoot them some listens and reviews, so be on the lookout c:

Awesome Concept

Man i love it. Seriously the intro alone had blown my mind. Some really original ideas here, the high pitched drone kind of sound that's panning and dropping out throughout the song is really interesting and nothing i've heard before.
The drums are simplistic but do the job and i like how it all gets a little crazy as around past 3:00. The mood the song creates is really cool and the whole thing has an awesome vibe. My complaint would be perhaps it's a little too long.
But i really did like this, and it's for songs like this that i come to the audio portal. Really fresh.

JakobKirchner responds:

I really appreciate your feedback! I don't usually get much back in terms of praise from the audio portal, but I keep putting crap up hoping someone gets it. I'm glad you do. Yeah I tried doing more with the beat in this, but it really changed the mood for me whenever I added anything. Look for me on here in the future. I post something almost every month

Groovey

I love the description. The music is also nice. The main melody is interesting and a little ambiguous in it's emotional tone which is nice. I think all the different sounds come together nicely and like you said are "friends". The whole song has an interesting vibe and the structure is cool too. Not sure what to criticize is guess perhaps it's a little repetitive, but other than that, good song!

KrrMaim responds:

I'm glad you went out of your way to listen to it and to even comment on it. I appreciate it.

Nobody does.

I liked this. The chord sequence and the melody where interesting and created a relaxed tone. The drums seemed lazy and sluggish and that too gave it a relaxed feel. I think some of the synth sounds were a bit too similar but you varied it as the song went on so that was nice. I think some sound effects/background noise might have been nice; the noise of a train running along a track or something. Good work and keep it up!

Interesting!

I clicked on this, looked at the genre and immediately thought "Oh dubstep... great... another kid hopping on the bandwagon and creating some unlistenable trash". But this was actually really nice! The drum rhythms were really interesting and the slowly declining high pitched drone was awesome. Nice to see some experimentation and i think you've produced a great piece here. "Psychedelic dubstep" ay, i like it!

Nice

Is it a cover? Either way i like it, the lyrics are mournful and melancholy and the tune is great. The harmonies are quite good, your singing isn't perfect but nobody's is. Good work on this!

Horsenwelles responds:

cover. yep.

incredibly self deprecating and beautiful :)

I feel your pain

but I'd recommend making the music for yourself, no one else will understand/appreciate it anyway. I like it though, it has a very relaxing feel and a nice melody. I feel that after the intro (0:00 - 1:45) you should have the guitar tone/effects change for the chords and perhaps had some drums or some other instrument enter. It felt like a turning point but it wasn't punctuated instrumentally. I like the build up and the bends at the more excitable parts where a nice touch. It gets a tad repetitive and this is again where i'd recommend mixing up the instrumentation or perhaps having a key change or some breakdown or just something to mix it up. But all in all it's a nice song, i like the filtering and the echo and i like the melodies. Good stuff!

Anonymous4life responds:

Thanks so much for the review! I like to think of this as a 'raw' track. In truth I came up with the main melodies at around 2 this morning and finished the song at around 4. I think I will be coming back to this track and adding drums like you said around the 1:45 mark. I also plan to raise the bass as it's very hard to hear and maybe take the phaser off the rthyhm guitar at some points. It kinda annoys me a little. Lol. Once again, thanks for the thoughtful review. I really do appreciate it.
